The Large Hadron Collider – and the inappropriately named God Particle

The day before the LHC was turned on (September 10th), the ten o’clock news on BBC Radio 4 ran a piece about the ‘God particle’, which may be discovered by the collider.
The whole report was full of religious references, to the point of having sacred music in the background, and was pitched at the level of ‘Now we are looking into the mind of God’.
This excessively religious take on the subject was introduced by the science correspondent, which was rather worrying.
Do they really have to be so lazy as to take the expression ‘The God Particle’ so literally?

One response to “The Large Hadron Collider – and the inappropriately named God Particle

  1. Nice!

    How about the Shiva Particle?

It would fit with CERN’s prominent statue of Shiva (to represent the chaos of the particle dance or Indian god of destruction, take your pick).

It would work for those of us campaigning for independent safety review or at least slow collision energy increases with analysis at each stage rather than immediate increase to full energy.
